Low Triglycerides: What does it mean?

Having low triglycerides is becoming more common, particularly with the introduction of extremely low fat and low carbohydrates in the fitness industry; however this is not the root or the only cause. Triglycerides are a type of fat that is naturally produced in the body, mainly by excess calories consumed. It is also present in certain foods that are common in the average diet.

Having Low Triglycerides is good for your body

It is more than correct to say that you should try and keep low triglycerides at all times and if you start noticing high triglycerides symptoms then your health may be at risk. Some would even go as far to say that keeping this level low is as important as exercising and maintaining a low weight.

Generally low triglycerides show a sign of good health as a high level can represent that your body is storing too many fats internally. Unbeknown to many, a high level of them could have negative effects on the heart which is why they are often monitored along with cholesterol. However whilst it is good to have a lower amount of fats in the body, having too little can still be harmful.

How Does Having Low Triglycerides benefit you?

As mentioned above having low triglycerides is a general sign of good health; however we have yet to discuss exactly why this is.

A Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Many studies on how to lower the risk of heart disease have actually looked directly at the triglyceride levels in the body. Fortunately for those out there who already have healthy levels, the results were very positive. It is has now been said that having low triglycerides levels of around 150 or lower is actually a great way to prevent heart disease occurring. A low level helps the heart in many ways and offers a lower blood pressure, less risk of a heart attack and even less of a chance of having a stroke.

Low Triglycerides represents healthy weight

As previously mentioned, triglycerides are fats that are often stored in the body for later use, this means that one of the main ways to tell if you have high triglycerides symptoms is when you are starting to gain weight. You can easily obtain a low triglycerides level by simply losing some weight and you can easily tell if you notice abdominal fat starting to disappear.

You need to watch how low your low triglycerides levels go

Whilst it is very advantageous to have a low triglycerides level for the reasons mentioned above, you should always remember that it becomes unhealthy when it gets too low. Extremely low triglycerides have found to be associated with more than one medical issue, some more serious than others. The most common diseases found to be related to include thyroid problems, AIDS / HIV or digestive problems.

If you were to notice excessive weight loss whilst still eating a healthy balanced diet, it is recommended that you visit your doctor right away. If you are found to have too low triglycerides, then there is a high chance that your body is not absorbing the right amount of nutrients to function properly.

If your body cannot absorb fats, it is often referred to as a malabsorption disease. This is the type of problem which can be closely followed by diseases such as HIV and celiac disease. These diseases are often some of the worse ones you can imagine, and whilst it is unbeknown to many; a lot of treatments actually aim to increase the level of triglycerides to enable you to regain weight.

Whilst a high triglycerides level has been associated with high cholesterol and heart problems, there might be a time when trying to achieve a higher level is suitable. Millions of people in the world suffer with eating disorders or diseases which force them to be skinnier than they would like to be. Whilst having low triglycerides is advantageous, some of the high triglycerides symptoms can help them get to where they want to be.

A higher triglyceride level can simply be achieved by adding more fats to your diet along with extra calories. Whilst having a high fat diet will help remove low triglycerides; if you eat too many fats and not enough carbohydrates, then you may go into a state called "Ketosis" by which your body changes to use fats as your primary source of energy. This will only maintain or cause you to lose weight.

Simply adding more calories in proteins, carbohydrates and fats is essentially the best way to increase the level of triglycerides in your body. This should help you gain some weight and achieve the look or feel you are aiming for.

The most important thing to remember with regards to your triglyceride levels is that even though low triglycerides are healthy, they can be related to very nasty diseases and it is important that you get checked up frequently as a general precaution.
